In the old days of Ulleungdo, there were so many hungry people during the long winter due to lack of food.
When the snow began to melt, people climbed the mountain to search for food and collect this plant to survive
a famine, and since then it was called "Myung-Ee" in Korean (victory onion).
Also there is a saying that this victory onion improves hearing.
A victory onion belongs to the lily family and widely grows in the northern region including Ulleungdo, Mt.
Seorak and Baekdu.
Its flower looks beautiful and is cultivated as a garden plant. It is also called 'Shinsoncho'.
In the origin myth of Korea called Dahngoon shinhwa, Woongneyo-a female bear which became a girl
after 100days of eating mugwort and garlic and then gave birth to Dahngoon.
Considering the time of the garlic introduced to Korea peninsula, what Woongnyeo ate in the myth is assumed
to be the victory onion, not the garlic that we know..
